The Go Green program comprises two elements in which buildings and firms can choose to participate. While Go Green is a "best practices" model, Go Green Plus adds a more in-depth benchmarking tool, for firms and buildings requiring or desiring this type of program. Using a web-based assessment tool, the Plus aspect of the Go Green program matches the ten requirements of Go Green, and drills further into the detail of each requirement. Data is gathered on-line to provide the benchmarking component.

In expanding the program to include Go Green Plus, BOMA is bringing additional value to this initiative, enabling participants to:

  • Develop action plans for savings on resource consumption costs and by reducing waste
  • Evaluate a portfolio of buildings and identify the strengths and weaknesses of each building
  • Capitalize on a valuable marketing and tenant relations tool
  • Foster increased environmental consciousness in building design and operations; and
  • Recognize that environmental objectives are a key part of strategic asset planning.

Benchmarking and More

Currently, there is no better tool in Canada than Go Green Plus to measure the environmental performance of existing commercial buildings. Based on the Green Globes assessment tool, the real value of Go Green Plus is in the level of detail it provides. Go Green Plus delivers scoring reports on how a building is performing, as well as providing very specific questions that enable the building manager to look at the components needed to achieve the benchmarks.

As a result, Go Green Plus empowers the people who are actually managing the building to participate in the process. The program measures each building's environmental factors such as energy use, indoor health and environmental performance against the best industry operation and management practices. In addition, Go Green Plus is an important educational tool, designed to encourage sustainable best practices throughout our industry.

Go Green Plus will enable you to benchmark your building's performance through a clear, comprehensive report that identifies strengths and weaknesses, and measures the performance of each building. Ultimately, Go Green Plus is about leveraging your building's strengths. A healthy workplace presents a marketing opportunity to attract environmentally-conscious tenants.

Go Green Plus Requirements

  • Energy (energy consumption, features, management, transportation)
  • Water (water efficiency)
  • Resources (waste reduction and recycling; site)
  • Emissions, Effluents and Other Impacts (air emissions; ozone depletion; water effluents, hazardous materials, hazardous products, health & safety and WHMIS)
  • Indoor Environment (indoor air, lighting, noise); and
  • Environmental Management (EMS documentation, purchasing policy, emergency response, tenant awareness)
  • View sample pages of the on line survey

Application & Verification

All building owners or owner representatives are required to complete in full the BOMA Go Green Application and Declaration Form.

Application forms must be completed in full with the duly signed declaration. Each application is to be accompanied by an application fee set by BOMA Canada. More details about the process can be found on the synopsis page, as well as in the Program Guide.

The building representative is provided with log-in and password access to the Go Green Plus on-line assessment tool, and completes the questionnaire.

An applicant building will receive a Go Green designation upon approval by BOMA Canada. The Go Green designation will apply to individual buildings only and not 'complexes'. A complex would include a development that has numerous buildings such as a university, where each building would require an individual application. Office parks that are owned and managed as a single property may be considered under one application. However, all buildings within the park must meet the requirements.

All applicant buildings are subject to a verification review to substantiate conformance to Go Green criteria in a manner determined by BOMA Canada.

Recognition

The BOMA Go Green Plus designation is the property of BOMA Canada and may be displayed at or promoted for an approved building subject to BOMA Canada guidelines. The designation is valid for a three-year period following application date. Approved buildings must resubmit an application and declaration form prior to the expiry date to renew the BOMA Go Green designated status.

The BOMA Go Green status applies to the applicant building and is independent of building ownership or management. A change in ownership or management will not affect a buildings status, during the three-year term, as long as the declared requirements have been maintained. A building not maintaining its acknowledged environmentally focused activities could lose its designation at the end of the term or sooner, at the discretion of the BOMA Canada.
